Lifeline Harbour to Hawkesbury holds seven book fairs a year in local government areas around northern Sydney to raise much needed funds for its crisis support and suicide prevention services. These are run by a workforce of dedicated volunteers, one of whom is a Glenorie resident who has been associated with Lifeline for a total of 15 years (see photo). Our next book fair is at Oakhill College, Old Northern Rd Castle Hill – 12-14th October 8AM – 5PM

Carole Stannard is the Collectible Books specialist at Lifeline’s Lindfield Book Depot. She is a retired English/History secondary school teacher who taught for many years at Richmond High School. She then spent time writing and implementing a reading program in schools before her career took a dramatic turn when she became John Williamson’s tour manager.

For ten years, Carole travelled with the iconic Australian singer-songwriter as he performed at rural, town and city venues around the country. It was after this stint of witnessing the breadth of this vast nation’s landscapes and people that she made a decision to ‘give back’, and she signed up to train as a volunteer telephone crisis supporter with Lifeline.

She worked on the 13 11 14 line for five years before her passion for books drew her to the Lindfield depot, where she and her fellow volunteers receive, cull and sort a constant stream of books generously donated by the community.

Not only does she enjoy the privilege of handling rare, beautiful and unusual volumes every day, she is part of a team of people who share her love of books and her commitment to making a difference in the community. She is pictured above with one of several handsome editions showcasing the broad range of Norman Lindsay’s art, all of which will be available to lucky collectors at the book fair.

If you would like more information about the book fair or would like to volunteer or arrange to visit the amazing Lindfield depot and meet Carole and other Lifeline volunteers, please contact the depot manager Michael Cleary on 0408 745 784.
