Local Government Activity – 2003 – 2008 Councillor, Baulkham Hills Shire Council:
Personal – Ray is a lifelong resident of the Hawkesbury Electorate, living on rural property at Rouse Hill, happily married to Wendy for 31 years and father to Kylie and Ryan. Rays family history can be traced back to 1791 when his ancestor Charles Whalan arrived in Australia on the ‘Ambermarle’ of the Third Fleet, as a young 19 year old convict. In 16 months Charles would be granted his ticket of leave and eventually become a close personal assistant and Senior Orderly to Governor Lachlan Macquarie, together making regular visits to the Hawkesbury district. Another family ancestor Robert Allen, was among the first Irish political prisoners sentenced to transportation and arrived in this country on the ‘Marquis Cornwallis’ from Ireland in 1796. Ray’s family the “Whalans’ and the “Allens” were early pioneers of the Hills and Hawkesbury Districts, obtaining land grants on Castle Hill Road, Castle Hill in 1814 and the Hawkesbury area adjoining the Hawkesbury River.
Qualifications, Occupations and Interests – Masters of Urban and Regional Planning (MURP(Curtin)), Curtin University.
Ray commenced his working life in two metal trades apprenticeships prior to working in the transport industry for 22 years, where he completed an additional two trade qualifications. Between 1985 and 2005 Ray held a Racing NSW Thoroughbred Trainers Licence and successfully operated a small business during that time within the Thoroughbred Racing Industry. Ray has since completed a Graduate Certificate of Development Planning and a Masters Degree in Urban and Regional Planning at Curtin University.
