The Rotary Club of West Pennant Hills and Cherrybrook has just completed its second project at St Gabriel’s School in Castle Hill. St Gabriel’s is an independent, co-educational, Catholic school catering for students with disabilities such as sensory impairment, intellectual disability in the mild to moderate range, and autism. Our first project was to provide a shaded sensory playground and storage shed for equipment.
The children have been enjoying this for some time. As an adjunct to the new secondary school facilities, the school suggested that we could assist them with the inclusion of a vegetable garden for the children to experience hands-on gardening.
The garden consists of 5 raised beds, a garden shed for storage of tools and a water tank on a raised platform. The building rainwater drainage system was modified to supply the tank to provide a sustainable supply for garden watering. Club members spent an enjoyable, rewarding and hard-working three days constructing the gardens, modifying the rainwater system and assembling the prefabricated shed.
