The UNSH Autumn Rose Show was held at Galston Community Centre on Sunday 8th April. Thank you to all who came and visited our show, bought raffle tickets and ate at our Bella Rosa Café. UNSH member, Celia Craig organised author, Diana Sargeant to fly from Victoria to help all day at the show and sold and signed her book “All About Roses”. Celia also donated a 7 day stay at their beach house in Mollymook. This was won by a Galston local.
UNSH member and professional singer, Angie Dean also had her latest CD for sale. The proceeds of the five separate raffles and four silent auctions of rosy quilted items and other goods, went to the UNSH Rose Show and The Dog Squad (providing rescue dogs for wounded veterans). It was wonderful to have six A Grade Rose exhibitors, travel one to two hours to stage their gorgeous roses. Congratulations to Ted and Meryl Morphett for winning Best in Show with their ‘Redgold’ and Champion Rose ‘Pope John 2’.
There were 142 rose exhibits staged, making the show very floriferous. The Show was complete with a Wine and Cheese function in the evening, thanking the sponsors, UNSH show workers and invited guests. Dural Garden Club President, Elaine Colley and Treasurer, Riva Dale; Galston Garden Club President, Sue Montgomery and Secretary, Kim Peterson; Bendigo Bank Manager and major sponsor, Gary Mangan and wife Karen; Kuring-gai Horticultural Society President Dr Doreen Clarke AM and Secretary Christine Rethers, were amongst the special guests. Ken and Sue Hargraves (also sponsors) were presented with the Best in Show; Champion Rose; Grand Champion Unit; Champion Floral Design roses, as an acknowledgement of their wonderful contribution to the gardening world (as their nursery of 47 years is auctioned on 6th May). Chair and Show Secretary UNSH, Kate Stanley concluded the evening, thanking all involved in the Inaugural UNSH Rose Show. Of particular note, was Trish Piper, Judy and Mal Satchell, David Smith, Ruth and Richard Griffiths and Paul Stanley, who worked tirelessly to make this show a success.
Over 30 UNSH show workers baked, sold, manned stalls, set up/packed, built, bought, served.
A big thank you to everyone who helped and donated. UNSH plans to have a stall during the Galston Open Gardens selling rosy gifts.
